Cure Kids Red Nose Day

On the last Friday of Term 2 we celebrated Red Nose Day to support Cure Kids. We all painted our noses red and most of us enjoyed a tasty Subway lunch. As a school we sang the Red Nose Day song, which we enjoyed learning to sing with Room N. In the afternoon Mrs Rodgers had organized for us, along with her class- our buddy class, to make red nose biscuits, which went down a real treat. Then we enjoyed watching a movie called Cats & Dogs.

Tallest Structure Challenge

On Friday room O and room L were put into teams to make the tallest structure. In just 20 nerve breaking minutes we had to make the tallest structure using only a limited amount of materials like: 20 pieces of news paper, one roll of tape and one pair scissors. In each team they sorted out jobs for each other like a person to cut the sellotape, one person rolling up news paper and the others would be planning and putting it together. If a team was having trouble the teacher was there to help you. If your group wasn’t working as a team it wasn’t a really good one. Some teams didn’t work so their structure didn’t really work. But at the end of the day it was really fun.

Liquefaction Experiment

This was a cool experiment we carried out at lunch time.  Interested in the liquefaction we had seen occurring after the Christchurch earthquake we tried to simulate it using a model. Some of us had some good explanations of how it worked – the soil compresses and compresses until it is completely saturated with water and as you can’t compress water the soil turns to mush.
It was quite exciting watching the solid soil (compacted sand) suddenly turn to mush and the buildings and vehicles start to sink.

Rugby World Cup

Here we are visiting the Webb Ellis Cup right here in Feilding. Some weren’t that interested and others quietly stood back and admired it. Quite interesting.

Can you guess who is who? Some of them have a remarkable likeness…

Enviro Day

Here are a couple of pictures from Wednesday’s Enviro Day. One of the pics show us working busily in our Room O garden. The other picture is of our decorated pots in which we planted Kowhai seeds. We had to scrape the outer layer of the seed (scarification) to allow water to enter so the seed would germinate. This is to mimic nature as the outer layer would be eroded as the kowhai seeds pass through a bird or are washed down stream.

Bike Out 2011

Here are some pictures of our bike trip to Timona Park, as part of our cycle safety unit. We rode to Timona park under police escort and once there we took part in a variety of cool activities such as being timed around a BMX track, riding through an obstacle course and taking part in a relay.
