NEWS FEED ON THE ART CHANNEL

Breaking NEWS!!!
Room O has been working on some 3D art to put in our calendars for 2014. We have been learning how to make 3D images like a 3D door, window, bench and more rooms. I for one like doing this because I can use it for future drawings.
That's it from O's awesome news!!!

Lights,  Camera, Action -Rongotea Production
Here we are walking in the doors of the civic centre. Everyone has been waiting for the for the whole week after the disaster last week when we came down had the  date wrong so we  had to walk all the way back to school... So, we had to wait a whole week but it was worth it with singing, dancing, music and a tiny bit of acting. But it was awesome and we loved it. There was our school, the intermediate, and even  St Joseph's Primary School. There was treasure and even a map. How cool is that! Ok, let us cut to the chase. I saw an 11 year old girl sing a really cool song; it blew my mind away. She totally could be a pop star. I wish I had a voice like that. Don’t you? I hope you enjoyed hearing about this amazing production. Keep tuned for more fun games and activities.

Bye for now Lily Carr and Ciara Humphrey

Spectacular Speeches

Spectacular Speeches
On Monday 20th October, I went to the St. John’s Hall on Bowen Street for the Lions Junior Speechmaker Contest, as I had come 2nd for the school speeches. My speech topic was ‘If I could own a magic pencil’. I said my speech last out of the eight contestants, but I didn’t come last, I came first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The girl who came second had a very funny speech about ‘If I could talk to animals’. Both the girls who came 2nd and 3rd were from St. Josephs Catholic School. All contestants received a $50 voucher for Paper Plus. And because I came 1st, I got a HUGE shield, almost the size of me! Next, I will go to Hawera for another speech competition, against Year 7s and 8s.

Swim 4 Life

All classes in the Senior Team have been participating in the Sea Lord Swim for Life program during Term Four. We've been having a lot of fun swimming and learning new techniques for water survival in case we are ever in a situation where the boat we're in sinks or crashes and we need to swim to safety in either our togs or our clothes. I think that doing this program as a year 5 and year 6 definitely improves our swimming as we get to practise water survival in both togs and clothes! My favourite part about getting to compete in the Swim 4 Life program is near the end when get to jump into the pool in our clothes! (Definitely not our school uniform though!)  The swim 4 life program is twice a week for each class on different days. Most of the Senior Team look forward to swimming in Swim 4 Life and really enjoy it a lot as it's a great way to get better at swimming and learning how to survive in a deadly situation . I really enjoy it and would love to do it every year!!!!!

M.S.S senior teams speech finals

It was nearly the end of Term three and Manchester Street school Senior Team Speech Finals were hełd at the fielding bible chapel. Two kids from every senior class got chosen to go into the speech competition! The kids from outstanding  Room O were Gabby Quin and Kezia Rodgers, from Room H were Milly Patching and Shannon Sawyers, from Room I were Sam baker and Tommi Davis  and from Room K with Oliver Dawson And Jayde Timmins.

Getting to say my speech in front of the group was exciting and a I was a tiny bit nervous. I got into the finals Yey... My speech was about " if I could be the French queen in the French Revolution! My favourite speech was Tommi's because I thought it was quite funny and sensible in the same way. It was about " if I could stop people from smoking".

It was time to find out who was going into the Inter-school Speech Finals where people from all the Primary Schools get to compete against each other to find out who is the winner! The lady who judged our school competition said " It was very close and it was so hard to choose but the two students who are going into the Inters-school Speech Competition are Sam baker from Room I and Kezia Rodgers From Room O!!!!!!

Robot Madness

This year Mr Ward started up robotics club for seniors at MSS. We go to the Fielding High School every Thursday. We get to choose out of three sections: Building, Designing and programming it. It took along time to build it and we had to build a claw after the base was finished. We have made serveral modifications to make out robot more competitive. We also got to programme on the system that the High School had. There are heaps of challenges on the software like going through mazes and knocking over cans - it was heaps of fun!!!, to see our programming work out...!
I for one would like to design a robot with a playback voice recorder and working hands. Also, I would like a time travelling robot that has a drinks machine that can't run out.

Dennis the Turtle

Dennis the turtle

We have got a class turtle named Dennis. As turtle monitors we get to clean, walk and feed him. We must do this duty Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.  It is a big responsibly and takes considerable time.  We feed him for 10 to 15 minutes so he doesn't over eat…   Every now and then we have to clean his tank with a special tube to siphon all the shell and poo out of the tank so it is nice and clean for him to swim in.

Dennis is a very important part of Room O. Dennis has a hard dark green shell. He is a very large turtle.  Dennis is a red eared turtle but the red has faded over time so there is no more red on his face.

Dennis is 20 years old - WOW that’s old!!!!! He is expected to live to around 40.

Dennis is a friend to every one in Room O and the worms we feed him for lunch J  When we get him out of his tank we have to hold him like a hamburger but we don’t eat him J  When we feed him we have to get lettuce, worms, snails and turtle food.  We enjoy having him in the class even if he is a loud turtle during some points of the day.

We got Dennis given to us by Miss Palmer’s mum along with the rest of the gear.  He likes being in the sun all the time along with being in the water.

Balloon Powered Cars

We designed and then made our balloon powered cars using cardboard, balloons,
straws, skewers and milk bottle lids. First we made the body of the car using cardboard, (the cardboard was flexible), then we chopped the end of a straw and stuck the skewer through the straw to be our axles. After we got the skewer through the straw we got milk bottle lids and put then on the skewers to be our wheels. To test the wheels, we held the straw and spun the wheels - perfect they worked! After that we made a hole in the top or the back of our cars and stuck a different straw in and then but a balloon on the end of the straw and stuck a bunch of tape around the balloon so no air could escape (as then they wouldn’t go as fast). Then if we wanted to, we could just make it look better and make it look cool by adding parts of cardboard to add more detail or colour it. After all the teams had finished it we tested them out - all of them did well!!

THE LIT QUIZ

THE LIT QUIZ
Did you know the best readers read the most? That’s why everyone at the Literacy Quiz is here, to test their expansive book-knowledge on challenging questions. The MSS group(Gabby, Lucas, James, Alex, Ella, and I)  is sitting in a vast hall ready to think. Unfortunately, so is everyone else. The competition is on!

Hours later, the Quizmaster, Wayne Mills, is announcing the winners. Our Manchester group is 1st in year 6, 2nd in Feilding teams and 3rd in the whole competition. We won $10 each, books, and a gift voucher for Whitcoulls. Afterwards, we went to Wendy’s for a yum lunch. Mrs Mackie, Mrs Meads, Ms Bennet and Mr Barrett paid for our food  because they were so proud of us. All in all, it was a great day.The only thing that annoyed me was that my brother beat me!

Room N and O's Trip to the Libiary

Wow! Room O and N set out for our secret mission to the Fielding Public Library. Did you know that the more you read the smarter you get? Anyway, as I was saying Room O and our buddy class,  Room N went to the the Fielding Public  Library. We had a special guest  that read us some interesting books.   There were really fantastic books there to read. It was really cool to see lots of people enjoy their books. On the way back to school, Room N and Room O  had a play on the Makino playground -  it was a really fabulous  outing.

Rubber band wind up car

Rubber-Band Powered Cars
In Room O we have been learning about ‘The Notion of Motion’. Our latest experiment was making rubber-band wind-up cars. First we all got our 1.5-2.25 litre bottles and drilled axle holes on either side. After that we cut out a large hole on top of the bottle to make it easier to wind up the car. To make the wheels we took four CD’s,and eight milk bottle lids for hubcaps. We hot-glue gunned the hubcaps to the middle of the CD after drilling holes in them. Then we got two skewers for axles. We rammed the wheels onto the skewers and put the axles with the CD’s on them through the holes on the bottle we drilled earlier. Mr. Ward drilled two holes in the bottle lid to put the rubber bands in. We cut off a 3 cm piece of skewer for the rubber band to hook onto. We knotted three rubber bands together and pushed them through the bottle lid holes. To make the rubber band car go we pulled the rubber band onto the little hook on the back of the axles and wound up the back wheels until it could not go any further. We placed it on the floor, let it go and watched it zoom away. In the future we hope to have a race!

Our Amazing Self-Portraits

There we are, sitting on the mat thinking of what we will do for art.  I know, we should do portraits - why do we need to do portraits? Because they will look cool on the walls. When we did them, they took more than three days to finish. I was one of the last to finish. J

To make them, first we took photos of us, then we then we faded them and went over the outline in sharpie, then we applied dye, cut them out and glued them onto our colourfully designed backgrounds. We had to wait for them to dry off before we hung them up on the wall. Some people had to wait longer than others but we all got them finished. J

Crazy Car Ramp Tesing

Yes, the moment I have been waiting for! We finally get use our toy cars on our cardboard and wooden ramps.  I think we are going to get a big surprise with how far the cars travel.  This will be so much fun -  we won’t do any school work for the afternoon…

I’ve got to get my car and my ramp. Ok, lets go! I hope my car doesn’t get wet (it’s drizzling and cold) while we are testing how far our cars go on ramps with different degrees of slope. “All right class - lets go get ready for our testing,” says Mr Ward .  We were very happy that we could try our ramps out.

The next day we made a humongous ramp - it was nearly as tall as the roof.   We got the car and counted down 3, 2, 1 then the tester released the car down the ramp – ZOOM! It travelled 6 metres and 30 centimetres (although it wasn’t a smooth ride) It went much further than the cars we tested outside.

Minecraft home work

I couldn't believe it MINECRAFT was now homework!!!

WE MUST MAKE... A HOUSE!!!
First we had to find a tree and punch is repeatedly until the block dropped but the tree flys in the air with out dropping so you had to keep on punching it until there is nothing left.

Then you go into your inventory and craft some sticks with your Wood planks and craft a pickaxe so you can get stone. Then you find a spot to build your house and start building here is on of David's finished products.

Room N and Room O`s spectacular Science

“Wow!!” it is buddy class today. Here is what we are doing with room N (our buddy class). Room O is doing a scientific lava lamp. We put lots of ingredients into bottles (food colouring, oil & water) and then we put a CO2 tablet in it. The carbon dioxide bubbles make the food colouring rise resulting in a lava lamp effect. In Room N we made electricity from balloons. First we rubbed the balloon on our head and quickly made the balloon touch the light stick. Then we had to go back to our rooms. “Bye” we said to each other as we went in. It was SENSATIONAL SCIENCE!!!

MSS Magnificent Swimming Sports

When we arrived at swimming sports, the first race was freestyle. Everyone was
zooming faster than a cheetah chasing its prey. The next freestyle race people went even faster than two cheaters running at the same time. The crowed was going wild like a lion roaring. The crowed was cheering for all of the kids. It made all of the kids go way faster! Now, the racers were going faster than a seal swimming in the water. Some people swam in all the races. Wow, some people won all of their races! Everyone was enjoying a day out and not in the classroom.

Fantastic Foxton 2014 and Fantastic Foxton Friday

Fantastic Foxton 2014

Wow it’s much cloudier than Feilding - I think it’s gonna rain! Ah, here we are at the fire station, we’re probably lining up over there? Room O in first… wow there are so many trophies, everyone’s wondrously looking at all these awesome awards and the TV... Now we all sit down and the life-guards talk about themselves and explain what they do. Now we all gather round to watch the surf life saving movie… are we there yet? I'm thinking in my head as they try and get the TV working... I think you need morning tea before we fix the TV and we can play some games. So games it was.

First we played sea-weed, next we went to have morning-tea and then the surf life saving movie that had all the information about signs, what to watch out for and all about being safe around the beach… Now we’re off to the beach.

When we get there practically everyone’s there. “Ok, first goal - don’t get sand all over my hands and sandals.” Next me and Nathan go to find a log or something to sit on so my bottom doesn't get sandy! And what do I do first? Accidentally get my hands sandy... After we've had our lunch we went into the shed full of all the life-guards equipment. Now she (the lifeguard) tells us about why they carry knives in the boat. She said, “What we do with the knives is we blunt them first so it won’t pop the boat, and also we use it for if some see-weed is caught in the motor - we’ll be able to cut it straight off, so shall we bring it out… “YES” everyone chanted so we had a look at that then we went into the water.

So we were in the ocean for ages then after awhile we hopped out and got dressed in the so-called cramped toilet/ mini changing rooms. Now all that’s left to do is get driven back to school.

Fantastic Foxton Friday

Finally, the awesome day has come once and for all! I was in the best car in the whole world; Tutu Manuel’s car. It was a very loud ride - we turned the volume up loud. We finally got to the Fire Station.

WOW in the hall way there were some awesome photos of some rescues the fire fighters did in the past year. After that, we were going to watch a movie on how to be safe at the beach but they couldn’t get the TV going so we went out to morning-tea and played sea weed.

They called us in because they (Mr Ward) got the TV going. The movie had all of these different signs. In the movie I have never seen this one sign in my whole life on a beach; it is a sign with a shark on the front.

After we zoomed off to Foxton Beach! Our group had our delicious lunch on a humongous log. After we had our lunch we had to do some exercises before we raced into the water. After we did the exercises, we had a long running race and I won the raceJ. After we had the race the senior team went into the freezing cold water. BBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, the water was as cold as a packet of ice! One of the life guards told us to start duck diving under the waves. So Kade, Oliver, Jack, Devon and I tried to beat the waves back to shore. If you look from a bird’s eye view the parents would have looked like a horse shoe.

When we had to get out of the water, I got out of the water by doing belly flops and duck dives. I had to wait about 10 minuets for the changing rooms to be free so I could get changed. Finally I got changed. After I got changed we zoomed off to school.
