Spectacular Speeches

Spectacular Speeches
On Monday 20th October, I went to the St. John’s Hall on Bowen Street for the Lions Junior Speechmaker Contest, as I had come 2nd for the school speeches. My speech topic was ‘If I could own a magic pencil’. I said my speech last out of the eight contestants, but I didn’t come last, I came first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The girl who came second had a very funny speech about ‘If I could talk to animals’. Both the girls who came 2nd and 3rd were from St. Josephs Catholic School. All contestants received a $50 voucher for Paper Plus. And because I came 1st, I got a HUGE shield, almost the size of me! Next, I will go to Hawera for another speech competition, against Year 7s and 8s.

Swim 4 Life

All classes in the Senior Team have been participating in the Sea Lord Swim for Life program during Term Four. We've been having a lot of fun swimming and learning new techniques for water survival in case we are ever in a situation where the boat we're in sinks or crashes and we need to swim to safety in either our togs or our clothes. I think that doing this program as a year 5 and year 6 definitely improves our swimming as we get to practise water survival in both togs and clothes! My favourite part about getting to compete in the Swim 4 Life program is near the end when get to jump into the pool in our clothes! (Definitely not our school uniform though!)  The swim 4 life program is twice a week for each class on different days. Most of the Senior Team look forward to swimming in Swim 4 Life and really enjoy it a lot as it's a great way to get better at swimming and learning how to survive in a deadly situation . I really enjoy it and would love to do it every year!!!!!

M.S.S senior teams speech finals

It was nearly the end of Term three and Manchester Street school Senior Team Speech Finals were hełd at the fielding bible chapel. Two kids from every senior class got chosen to go into the speech competition! The kids from outstanding  Room O were Gabby Quin and Kezia Rodgers, from Room H were Milly Patching and Shannon Sawyers, from Room I were Sam baker and Tommi Davis  and from Room K with Oliver Dawson And Jayde Timmins.

Getting to say my speech in front of the group was exciting and a I was a tiny bit nervous. I got into the finals Yey... My speech was about " if I could be the French queen in the French Revolution! My favourite speech was Tommi's because I thought it was quite funny and sensible in the same way. It was about " if I could stop people from smoking".

It was time to find out who was going into the Inter-school Speech Finals where people from all the Primary Schools get to compete against each other to find out who is the winner! The lady who judged our school competition said " It was very close and it was so hard to choose but the two students who are going into the Inters-school Speech Competition are Sam baker from Room I and Kezia Rodgers From Room O!!!!!!

Robot Madness

This year Mr Ward started up robotics club for seniors at MSS. We go to the Fielding High School every Thursday. We get to choose out of three sections: Building, Designing and programming it. It took along time to build it and we had to build a claw after the base was finished. We have made serveral modifications to make out robot more competitive. We also got to programme on the system that the High School had. There are heaps of challenges on the software like going through mazes and knocking over cans - it was heaps of fun!!!, to see our programming work out...!
I for one would like to design a robot with a playback voice recorder and working hands. Also, I would like a time travelling robot that has a drinks machine that can't run out.

Dennis the Turtle

Dennis the turtle

We have got a class turtle named Dennis. As turtle monitors we get to clean, walk and feed him. We must do this duty Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.  It is a big responsibly and takes considerable time.  We feed him for 10 to 15 minutes so he doesn't over eat…   Every now and then we have to clean his tank with a special tube to siphon all the shell and poo out of the tank so it is nice and clean for him to swim in.

Dennis is a very important part of Room O. Dennis has a hard dark green shell. He is a very large turtle.  Dennis is a red eared turtle but the red has faded over time so there is no more red on his face.

Dennis is 20 years old - WOW that’s old!!!!! He is expected to live to around 40.

Dennis is a friend to every one in Room O and the worms we feed him for lunch J  When we get him out of his tank we have to hold him like a hamburger but we don’t eat him J  When we feed him we have to get lettuce, worms, snails and turtle food.  We enjoy having him in the class even if he is a loud turtle during some points of the day.

We got Dennis given to us by Miss Palmer’s mum along with the rest of the gear.  He likes being in the sun all the time along with being in the water.
